Men Get Library Job Easier than Women?

We’re not sure how we could actually answer this question whether men get library  job easier than women without extensive research. Unfortunately, librarians do not have time to do extensive research and LIS professors who have time do not like to do research on libraries.

So we will just have to do things or go with the anecdotal evidence you are willing to offer.

We know that librarians are mostly white women. According to census PMO librarian, the current composition of the library is 83% women. If this relationship is directed against white men, would anyone be crying sexism, and they may even be right.

There are all possible reasons for this. Librarian has traditionally been considered women’s work, along with nurses and school tuition. Thus, many men tend to avoid the profession entirely, even today, rightly believing that the answer to the question “What do you do for a living?” at a cocktail party, “I am a librarian” will not impress the ladies, or for that matter the men.

Then maybe some bias involved. Search committees tend to hire people who look like them. So if the committee is all white women may have a tendency to hire more like them. Or maybe just not much to choose. Who knows.

The ratio between women to men is slightly lower in academic libraries, and at least be lower among administrators, although it may change. Many women who are directors of the library, so that the old days of women working in the trenches, the men sat in the top office making twice to go.

But return to the question: Men have an easier time getting jobs than women?

Back in the day, I remember the only people who can not find a job after library school were women, but statistically speaking, that would make sense. If the majority of students are women, most unfortunate students would be too. Normally, the best candidate is the first offer, regardless of gender, and even though my desire that is hot, straight guys in the industry. I do not know if the men are more easier.

If anything, men should be at a disadvantage. I’ve seen plenty of jobs ads for libraries that have non-standard work, equal opportunities and encouraging women and minorities to apply for the School of Library needs more women.

Despite the lack of women in the School of Library, where librarians are likely to say they are interested in diversity, which would consider a betrayal of their policy to hire the person, especially a white man. Ultimately, these white men are highly paid IT jobs. Why they take low-paid jobs library away from different women and minorities? It’s just not fair.

So do you think men have an easier time getting jobs in librarianship, like they are often in other areas? Were you hired because you were a man, or because you were not? Did you hire someone because they are men or not to hire someone?
